Advocate for Justice

How terrible it will be for those who make unfair laws, and those who write laws that make life hard for people. They are not fair to the poor, and they rob my people of their rights. They allow people to steal from widows and to take from orphans what really belongs to them. Isaiah 10:1- 2

Durham CAN

Durham CAN is a diverse partnership of congregations, neighborhoods and associations working to identify solutions to shared community concerns and bring them to the attention of elected officials. It has worked on improving affordable housing, job training, school resources for immigrant families, public transit, and livable wages. 1st Presbyterian is a member of the organization and actively participates in its activities.

Durham Congregations In Action (DCIA)

DCIA works to bring together faith congregations to promote understanding across boundaries of faith, race, and ethnicity and build an inclusive community of justice & peace. 1st Presbyterian was a founding member. Although DCIA does to provide direct service, it has built a history of initiating cooperative programs to address unmet community needs.

End Poverty Durham

End Poverty Durham is a group of interfaith leaders and community-based organizations working collaboratively to eliminate poverty in Durham. (www.endpovertydurham.org) 1st Presbyterian participates in its operation and provides financial assistance to the organization as well as to REAL Durham, one of its initiatives. REAL (Relationships Equipping Allies and Leaders) Durham works by bringing Leaders (those in material poverty) together with Allies (community volunteers) to achieve the Leaders’ personal goals for economic stability, including increased income and assets.
