About Our Church
First Presbyterian Church is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church USA. Established in 1871, First Presbyterian is the oldest of the ten PCUSA churches in Durham.
First Presbyterian Church is “downtown by history and by choice.” Like many congregations who remain downtown, First Presbyterian’s life has long been centered on concerns and ministries of justice and compassion as taught in scripture. An active social ministry program is the hallmark of this downtown church. The buildings house the First Presbyterian Day School (a five-start child care program). The congregation supports local and far-reaching ministries with financial resources as well as time and energy.
First Presbyterian Church welcomes all who worship here. We honor and celebrate the human diversity and unity that God gives us in Christ. We welcome individuals of every age, race, nationality, gender, ability, sexual orientation, and economic circumstance to participate fully in the life of the church.
The congregation includes some 575 members from diverse backgrounds and an array of ages. The congregation is open and inclusive, believing that the Spirit “calls women and men to all ministries of the church.”
We always welcome newcomers so please join us for worship any Sunday. If you are interested in learning more, please call the church office at 919-682-5511 or fill out our contact form.
