Ways To Get Involved: Education

ADULT LECTIONARY

The Lectionary Class uses the Revised Common Lectionary, a three-year cycle of scripture passages for each Sunday, as the basis for our Bible study. Every week we are presented with four readings: one from the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), a companion reading from a Psalm, one from a Gospel, and one from an Epistle. We dig into each passage, in its own context, in its connections to other passages, and in its applications to our own lives. Our discussions are good preparation for the worship service that follows, in which the same lectionary readings usually form the basis for the liturgy, hymns, and sermon. We welcome students of all ages to join us, whether they grew up with the Bible or are new to it. 9:45 on Sunday morning, in person in the Robert Daye (East) Parlor and also via Zoom.

FAITH AND COMMUNITY

This class explores the intersection of being a part of the community of Durham, particularly its downtown neighborhoods, and being a faithful Christian. In particular, how might we form the Beloved Community amidst our neighbors and friends in the Bull City. This class often brings in speakers from outside of the congregation, but also finds leadership from within FPC. Rev. John Weicher coordinates this class and supports its leaders. 9:45am on Sunday morning, in the Fellowship Hall.

THINGS THAT MATTER BOOK GROUP

The purpose of the group is to get together to discuss books that addressed “things that matter,” a rather broad term to include issues of interest and importance to participants. The group is open to all adults, and people are welcome to attend even if they haven’t read the book. The group normally meets on the second Tuesday of the months of September, November, January, February, March, May, June, and July. It has been a place to develop strong friendships as we are educated and enlightened about things in the world that matter to us a lot.

CHILDREN

Faith Formation classes are offered for children from Preschool through 5th grade. There are 3 classes: Preschool (up to Kindergarten) class; Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grades class; and 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades class. Each of these classes meets on Sunday mornings from 9:45-10:45. During worship, childcare is provided for infants through 5 year olds. Children are always welcome with open arms during worship, and worship bags are available for children just outside the sanctuary. Finally, children are ALWAYS welcome at First Presbyterian Church events which are outside of the Faith Formation hour and Worship.
