Ways To Get Involved: Service
URBAN MINISTRIES OF DURHAM
First Presbyterian supports Urban Ministries of Durham (UMD) by preparing and serving hot breakfast and by prepping bag lunches for their walk-in cafeteria. UMD (https://umdurham.org/) is the primary point of connection for those who are homeless, hungry, or in need in Durham.
We make and serve breakfast on the third and fifth Friday of each month, 7:00 am to 9:00 am. We make sandwiches for bag lunches on the third Monday and fourth Thursday, 9:30 to 10:30.
We are always looking for new folks to join us! A monthly email details opportunities to serve at UMD, and you can reply to sign up.
If you have questions or are interested in volunteering at UMD, you can also contact Jancy Johnstone at 929.824.6489 or [email protected]
IGLESIA EMANUEL
We have two opportunities to serve with our sister church at 2504 N Roxboro Street, Durham 27704.
Food Pantry: Join other volunteers from all over the community to help fill bags and boxes with lots of nutritious food for families facing economic hardship. We work in 2-hour shifts every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. An average of 620 families receive food every single week. It takes a lot of energetic and dedicated volunteers to keep this food pantry going strong. If you are not able to volunteer in person, we would welcome your donations of food, or rice and beans that you bag from home. Come be part of this special ministry!
Tutoring Program: The Iglesia Emanuel Learning Center offers one-on-one tutoring for Hispanic students from 1st grade through high school. We meet every Tuesday and Thursday evening, 6-7pm. Tutors have the opportunity to help change the educational outcomes for children who suffered disproportionately with the challenges of virtual learning during the pandemic. The students come eager to learn and grateful for the care and attention they receive. All tutoring is done in English.
