New Children’s Choir


The Alleluia Children’s Choir debuted September 15 and led the 10:00 service at Covenant Presbyterian Church. They sang at the 11:00 service at FPC on September 29. The newly formed choir is a joint effort of these two congregations. Second-fifth graders are welcome to join this choir which rehearses at Covenant on the third Saturday afternoon of the month and at First Presbyterian on Sunday evenings on all other weekends. Please contact Kathy Parkins at FPC for more information on practice and performance schedules or Brennetta Simpson at Covenant Presbyterian, the director of the choir.
Retirement Celebration this Sunday!


A retirement celebration/reception will be held following worship this Sunday, December 22, 2019. Come bid Sam farewell as our Associate Pastor. On Monday, August 26, 2019, the Session of First Presbyterian Church received and accepted a letter of request to retire from ministry from Sam Miglarese, Associate Pastor, effective December 31, 2019. Please join us at FPC for Kick-Off Sunday 9:45 – 10: 45 a.m. in Watts-Hill Hall PLANNED ACTIVITIES *Build an edible creation out of graham crackers, icing, Twizzlers, marshmallows, and gumdrops *Join a group to build connections with LEGO’s, magnets, wooden blocks, and JENGA *Paint baffles together for Habitat for Humanity *Take a silly picture in the photo booth with a friend *Put together a puzzle with friends *Grab a bagel, some fruit, or a cup of coffee and reconnect with an old buddy *Meet your new Sunday School teachers and classmates for 2019-2020 FPC’s theme for the year is Building Connections because the Bible tells us that loving relationships matter: relationships with God, and relationships with one another. Furthermore, brain science research tells us that these relationships are the biggest builder of children’s brains and the greatest way to build health and well-being into their lives that will last into adulthood. Kick-off Sunday is for children, youth and adults! Join us as we build relational connections that matter within the body of Christ. |

FPC Teens perform at Youth Conference

Great Big Church Family Festival

FPC’s hosting duties are over, so now it is time for us to return the favor as good guests. Trinity Avenue Presbyterian Church is hosting the third and final festival night on Sunday, August 4. The cost of the meal is $5 per individual; $10 per family. If your youth needs summer service hours, they can acquire those by helping prepare for the evening and participating in the event (up to 3 hours of service credit available). So, plan to join us for dinner and service at this final GBCFF. Community Service volunteer forms will be available for youth at registration. Trinity Avenue Presbyterian is located at 927 W. Free Community Concert


The joint choirs of St. Philip’s Episcopal and First Presbyterian churches of Durham, accompanied by orchestra and organ, will present a Spring Concert featuring the Requiem by Gabriel Fauré and anthems by John Rutter. Free and open to the public, the concert is made possible by a gift from the Horst and Ruth Mary Meyer Fund for Music and Gardens.

FPC prepares for Hurricane Florence


In preparation for forecasted flooding and strong winds from Hurricane Florence, FPC plans to operate on the following schedule into this weekend:
Thursday, September 13 – Building closing at 5 PM –
Friday, September 14 – Building closed all day –
Saturday, September 15 – Building closed all day –
Sunday, September 16 – Building open only for 11 AM Worship (dependent upon favorable conditions) –
No Sunday School
No Membership Inquiry Class
No Confirmation Class
No Congregation Lunch
No Children’s Choir rehearsal
No Stewardship Visit Training
No Middle School Youth Group
No High School Youth Group.
A final decision regarding worship will be announced around noon on Saturday, September 15, once an assessment of conditions is made.

We encourage you to heed all travel advisories to stay off the roads. Listen to/watch local news outlets for information about the storm and areas impacted. Shelters will be open throughout Durham for those unable to be safe in their own homes.
You are invited to use the Church Life app (if installed on your smartphone) to check-in with church members who live in your neighborhood to make sure they are okay.
