Congregational Meeting – February 10, 2019


The Session of First Presbyterian Church of Durham has called a Congregational Meeting for Sunday, February 10, for the purpose of electing an Associate Pastor Nominating Committee (APNC). The meeting will be held at the end of worship.
The Associate Pastor Nominating Committee will be charged with recommending the person to be called as Associate Pastor for Youth and Their Families. John Weicher began serving as our Temporary Associate Pastor for Youth and Their Families under a one-year renewable contract on August 1, 2018. He is eligible to apply for this position.
With input from the membership, the Nominating Committee is recommending the following members be elected to serve on this Associate Pastor Nominating Committee:

Support Souper Bowl Sunday, February 3


Sunday, February 3 is Souper Bowl Sunday at FPC!
The children, with help from their families and some youth, assembled packets of yummy dried bean soup mix on MLK Day 2019. The children and youth will be in the foyer after worship on Souper Bowl Sunday, February 3, to offer the soup packets in exchange for a donation to benefit the Food Bank of Central NC. Thank you in advance for supporting this annual fund-raising project for hunger relief.
Mallarme Concert – Feb. 3 at 2PM


SERIES CONCERT #3–LEIPZIG LOCALS in the FPC Sanctuary.
Music by J.S Bach’s contemporaries with a Leipzig connection featuring Kathie Stewart from Apollo’s Fire on the traverso (baroque flute) with cellist/gambist Jaap ter Linden. Joining them on the program are baroque violinist Nicholas DiEugenio and harpsichordist Elaine Funaro. Tickets:$25 adults/$5 children and students at the door.
This concert is given in partnership with the Raleigh Area Flute Association.

FPC hosting Annual March and Rally


National MLK Day Unity March, Rally, and Book Reading – January 21, 2019
(Sponsored by the Durham Community MLK Steering Committee)
The Unity March and Rally participants will assemble at 10:30 a.m. on the main steps of North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company on Chapel Hill Street. Our citizens will proceed down Chapel Hill Street past the intersection of Five Points, past the Main Post Office through the intersection of Mangum Street and Chapel Hill Street and pass the #1 Fire Station and end at Roxboro Street at the Main Durham County Library(under construction). The march will culminate in the parking lot of First Presbyterian Church at about 11:30. The community rally will begin at 12 noon in the sanctuary. The Durham Children’s Choir will provide music. After the rally, there will be a book reading event in the East Parlor. Participants of the Unity March and Rally are asked to bring new and gently used children’s books for donation to Book Harvest’s Dream Big Book Drive. Donation boxes will be available at NC Mutual Life Insurance Company and at First Presbyterian Church. FPC celebrates MLK Day (January 21) with Service Project


All ages, especially families with school-age children, are invited to the church on Monday from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. to make dry bean soup packets. We will save these to offer on Souper Bowl Sunday (February 3) for a donation to benefit the Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC. The church office is closed on Monday, January 21.

“Only Light, Only Love” – Winter 2019
Songs of Light, Love, and Freedom
Sunday, January 20, 2019, 3:00 p.m.
With Special Guest NCCU Vocal Jazz Ensemble.
Concert features music about light, love, and freedom; its centerpiece is based on the words of Martin Luther King Jr. The concert will also feature freedom songs from around the globe, compositions and texts by contemporary female composers and poets, and other songs of hope and love. Durham City/County Employees Annual Civic Celebration
Tuesday, January 15 at 12 Noon (FPC sanctuary)
The keynote speaker will be newly elected judge Anita Earls. The event program will also include remarks from local leaders and elected officials along with musical selections from the Durham City-County MLK Employee Choir. The event is free and open to the public.
