January 12, 2026
Honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is the purpose of the annual Durham City-County Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) Employee Observance. The celebration, jointly hosted by the City of Durham and Durham County, will take place on Tuesday, January 27, 2026. The event will begin at 11 a.m. inside First Presbyterian Church located at 305 E. Main Street in downtown Durham.
Dr. Karrie G. Dixon, Chancellor of North Carolina Central University, will be the keynote speaker for the 21st annual celebration event. Dr. Dixon is the 13th chancellor of NCCU. Before her appointment, she served as the 12th chief executive officer and 7th chancellor of Elizabeth City State University. As a seasoned senior administrator in the University of North Carolina System, Dr. Dixon has served in a higher education leadership role since 2008. A nationally respected higher education leader, Dr. Dixon serves on multiple state and national boards and has received numerous honors, including the Old North State Award and the William C. Friday Lifetime Achievement Award.
The Dignity of Work: Honoring Dr. King’s Legacy of Service and Equality is the event theme for 2026. The 2026 Durham City-County Martin Luther King Jr. Employee Observance seeks to reflect on how this principle continues to guide our shared mission in local government and public service.
The community is invited to join the event which will include remarks from local leaders and elected officials. Musical selections will be provided by singer by Stellar Music Award nominee and gospel artist, Kim Person.

Rise Up! celebrates the immeasurable contributions of women as musicians, poets, authors, scientists, artists, activists, matriarchs, and peacemakers. We pay tribute to those who confront injustice, spark movements, and inspire lasting change — women whose legacy endures. This concert will be performed in collaboration with the SV-Five ensemble of Sisters’ Voices directed by Leandra Merea Strope.

Raising Our Voices in Prophetic Witness
December 09, 2025 As Christians, our beliefs are rooted in the beatitudes: Blessed are the poor, the dispirited, the bereft, the meek, those who hunger for food or for righteousness, the merciful, the pure in heart, the peacemakers, and the persecuted (Matthew 5:1-12). We cannot, therefore, be reserved in our witness to God’s Kingdom, living as we do in a world that values wealth, profits from war, and persecutes prophetic dissent. Our calling is not to be silent but to be like a city built upon a hill, to be the salt of the earth, to be the light of the world.

Interested in Poetry?
October 09, 2025
Explore the strengths and gifts of poetry to connect us to our faith. We will read selected poems and discuss what they disclose about central themes such as the nature of God, the good, human frailty, social harms, and social justice. Poetry beginners and old hands are all welcome. This is a poetry reading group, not a writing group, so no special skills in poetic expression are required. Our leader, Madge McKeithen, led such a group for 15 years through the New York Public Library, and she taught creative writing for 25 years at the New School in New York. We will gather names of people interested in reading poetry together and then discern the frequency and time slot that works best. If you are interested, please contact Susan Dunlap, [email protected].
The Lake Trio
September 08, 2025 Friday, September 26 at 7:00pm
First Presbyterian is honored to present this performance made possible through the generous support of beloved benefactors, Horst and Ruth Mary Meyer. The event will honor their deep love for the arts and our Durham community.

This concert promises an evening of expressive and inspiring music, performed by three exceptional musicians whose friendship and shared history enrich every note.
The program features Haydn’s vibrant “Gypsy” Piano Trio, famous for its high-energy finale inspired by a Hungarian folk dance—a crowd-pleaser that bursts with rhythmic flair and charm. Listeners will also experience Arensky’s lush and deeply emotional Piano Trio in D minor, a piece filled with sweeping melodies and dramatic contrasts, written as a heartfelt tribute to a lost friend. Whether you’re a classical aficionado or simply love music that moves you, this concert offers an unforgettable journey through joy, passion, and human connection.
