The Lake Trio

Friday, September 26 at 7:00pm

First Presbyterian is honored to present this performance made possible through the generous support of beloved benefactors, Horst and Ruth Mary Meyer. The event will honor their deep love for the arts and our Durham community.

This concert promises an evening of expressive and inspiring music, performed by three exceptional musicians whose friendship and shared history enrich every note.

The program features Haydn’s vibrant “Gypsy” Piano Trio, famous for its high-energy finale inspired by a Hungarian folk dance—a crowd-pleaser that bursts with rhythmic flair and charm. Listeners will also experience Arensky’s lush and deeply emotional Piano Trio in D minor, a piece filled with sweeping melodies and dramatic contrasts, written as a heartfelt tribute to a lost friend. Whether you’re a classical aficionado or simply love music that moves you, this concert offers an unforgettable journey through joy, passion, and human connection.

Brighten the Sanctuary

The flower ministry of FPC offers a meaningful way to donate flowers for the sanctuary in memory or in honor of a loved one, or in celebration of a special occasion. Each Sunday, the flower arrangements bring the colors and beauty of nature to our worship service. Following worship, our deacons divide the flowers and deliver smaller arrangements to members who are ill or grieving, or unable to attend church, as a way of sharing with them a part of our worship service. Ninth Street Flowers creates the beautiful arrangements each Sunday.

If you would like to be a donor of flowers for worship in 2025, please sign up by clicking below. Donations can be made by an individual, a family, or jointly by multiple individuals or families on open dates.

Youth Stock Brunch

The Youth Stock Brunch is coming up, and you’re invited!

In this second year, we have made some changes. Like last year, FPC youth who participated in three of our summer trips — the Appalachia Service Project trip to Perry County, KY, the CROSS Missions trip to Charlotte, and the Montreat Youth Conference — are throwing a brunch, showing pictures and telling stories from their experiences.

New this year, the whole church is invited, not just those who have bought stock in the trip. The brunch and presentations are Sunday, August 24, 9:30-10:30 am in Watts-Hill Hall.

To RSVP, please email John Weicher at [email protected] by Sunday, August 17 so we can properly prepare. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out via the same method.

SONAM Chorus

Singers of New and Ancient Music (SONAM) is a chorus committed to creating high-quality sacred and secular music and giving back to the community. This show features music from SONAM’s recent tour to Latvia, Estonia, and Finland, in support of Iglesia Emanuel Food Pantry.

A Time to Reflect on True Freedom

Church Office Closed for July 4th

Our church offices will be closed on Thursday, July 4th in observance of Independence Day.

As we honor this national holiday, we invite you to take time to reflect on the deeper meaning of freedom as an ongoing call to justice and compassion. While July 4th marks a moment of independence for some, we recognize that the work of building a truly just and equitable society continues.

As followers of Christ, we are reminded that true freedom is collective and rooted in love, dignity, and the sacred worth of every human being. May this holiday be both a celebration and a moment of prayerful recommitment to the Gospel values of justice, mercy, and peace for all.

Wishing you a safe, meaningful, and reflective Independence Day.

Juneteenth 2025

Honoring Juneteenth

June 19, 2025

Juneteenth is a sacred moment in our shared history. As we pause to reflect, we are called to face our nation’s past with honesty and humility, and to recommit ourselves to the work of justice, healing, and unity.

Here is a list of events on and around that weekend to celebrate Juneteenth in Durham.

The church office will be closed June 20th in observance of this holiday.

Fill That Bus!

July 4 – August 8

The annual “Fill That Bus!” school supply drive is here! Every year, we count on the community to restock our shelves with the classroom essentials our Durham Public Schools educators need to fuel their students’ success.

Last year, Crayons2Calculators distributed over $129,000 worth of supplies—reaching 96% of Durham Public Schools teachers across 59 schools. And demand is only growing. Teachers are still spending hundreds of dollars out of pocket to make sure students have what they need. Your support fills that gap. Your support sparks learning.

We proudly serve every school in Durham Public Schools, providing everything from pencils and notebooks to art supplies, paper, and more. Drop off supplies from July 4-August 8 in the marked bins in the church foyer! List of most needed supplies. You can also always make a financial donation to support this work.

Thanks for supporting our public school community!

Summer Book Read 2025

Our summer book discussion begins June 1 with How We Learn to Be Brave: Decisive Moments in Life and in Faith by Marianne Edgar Budde. This inspiring book invites us to reflect on moments that shape our courage and deepen our faith.

Though this is part of our Faith Formation series, we warmly welcome members of the wider community to read along with us at your own pace—or consider joining us for a session. Come be part of the conversation and grow with us this summer.
